BPUB Receives Highest National Recognition for Reliable Electric Operations

BROWNSVILLE, TX— The Brownsville Public Utilities Board (BPUB) has earned a diamond Reliable Public Power Provider (RP3)® designation from the American Public Power Association (APPA) for providing reliable and safe electric service.

The RP3 designation recognizes public power utilities that demonstrate proficiency in four key disciplines: reliability, safety, workforce development, and system improvement. Criteria include sound business practices and a utility-wide commitment to safe and reliable delivery of electricity. BPUB joins more than 275 public power utilities nationwide that hold the RP3 designation. The RP3 designation lasts for three years.

BPUB also earned diamond status in 2017, making this the second time it receives the highest honor from APPA.

“Receiving a diamond RP3 designation for the second time is a great honor and demonstrates the incredible work from our employees in providing the best service year-round to our customers,” said BPUB General Manager & CEO John S. Bruciak. “Our crews are out there every day, putting themselves on the line for the community. This honor recognizes the commitment that all at BPUB have toward our mission.”

BPUB provides electrical service to more than 50,000 customers in the Brownsville area. BPUB has a diverse electric system that includes three power plants, one wind farm, 14 substations and more than 730 miles of line to distribute power. Along with that, BPUB continues to plan for Brownsville’s growth and electric demands.

Located in Washington, D.C., APPA is the national organization representing more than 2,000 not-for-profit, community- and state-owned electric utilities.
