Damaged Electrical Pole Causes Outage in Northwest Brownsville

BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS – A car accident early Thursday morning broke an electrical pole at Military Highway and Alton Gloor Boulevard belonging to American Electric Power (AEP). The Brownsville Public Utilities Board (BPUB) has a line attached to that pole, which caused an outage that affected almost 3,000 BPUB customers.

BPUB crews work to restore the damaged pole that left 3,000 customers with out power.

The car accident happened at 2:34 a.m. this morning. BPUB crews arrived at the scene around 3 a.m. and began to restore as many customers as possible. At 4:32 a.m., BPUB reduced the number of customers without power to approximately 1,000. Additional customers were able to be restored at 7:14 a.m., leaving approximately 500 customers without power at this time.

Repair work on the utility pole was unable to begin until AEP repair crews arrived on site later in the morning. BPUB personnel are coordinating with AEP in replacing the utility pole and restoring service. Power restoration is a complicated process that requires a lot of preparation and coordination between the two utilities.

At this time, it is estimated that power will be restored to all BPUB customers by early this afternoon.

BPUB apologizes for the inconvenience this causes. For any questions or other outage-related issues, customers can call 956-983-6100.
