BPUB Reminds Public to Avoid Flushing Wipes

BROWNSVILLE, TX – With people spending more time at home and the high use of disinfecting wipes, BPUB wants to remind customers to dispose of wipes and any toilet paper alternative properly. Wipes should never be flushed down the toilet.

“Unfortunately, wipes rarely if ever are biodegradable in the sanitary sewer system,” BPUB Pretreatment Manager Juan Ramon Carrizales said. “Although they’re marketed as flushable, disposable wipes clog pipes and cause equipment failure in the sewer system, lift stations and wastewater treatment plants.”

Clogged pipes from wipes, paper towels or other toilet paper alternatives also cause sewer overflows. This unpleasant public health hazard can occur in your home or on your property, leaving a big mess to clean in addition to the clog that still needs to be cleared.

BPUB urges customers to not flush the following items:

  • Baby/Disinfecting Wipes
  • Paper Towels
  • Diapers
  • Rags
  • Plastics/Latex Items
  • Sanitary Napkins
  • Syringes
  • Kitty Litter
