BPUB Observes Public Power Month

The Brownsville Public Utilities Board (BPUB) is extending Public Power Week (Oct. 6-12) through the entire month of October by hosting an electrical community tour for customers, highlighting the benefits of public power and continuing outreach and education to customers about electrical rates and energy efficiency.

“Public power is a cornerstone of community well-being, providing reliable and locally controlled utility services that are essential for growth and stability,” BPUB General Manager & CEO Marilyn Gilbert said. “We like to extend the week observation to help educate our customers about the benefits of public power throughout the month.”

BPUB invites community members to participate in a variety of Public Power Month events, including:

  • Newspapers in Education – The Oct. 12 edition of the Brownsville Herald is for parents and children, as it publishes about the benefits of public power, ways BPUB gives back to the community and recent changes in bills as well as some activities for the children.
  • Touch-a-Truck – Join BPUB on Saturday, Oct. 19, at the Children’s Museum of Brownsville from 1 to 4 p.m. to discover more about BPUB’s water, wastewater, and electrical services. Children will have the opportunity to explore and interact with the trucks and equipment that BPUB crews use daily, while engaging in fun activities that highlight the advantages of public power. There’s no admission fee for the truck portion of the event, and entry to the museum will be complimentary during event hours.
  • Fall Community Tour: Electricity– On Friday, Oct. 25, customers are invited to tour BPUB’s Silas Ray Power Plant and Rio Grande substation. Participants will learn about meter tampering and enjoy an impressive pole climbing demonstration by BPUB lineworkers. To secure a spot, please register on the BPUB website, as seating is limited to 25 participants.
