BPUB Celebrates Public Power Month

The Brownsville Public Utilities Board (BPUB) is celebrating Public Power Month in October along with more than 2,000 other citizen-owned electric utilities.

“Public Power Month celebrates the reliable, affordable and locally owned power that the Brownsville Public Utilities Board provides to our community,” said BPUB General Manager & CEO John S. Bruciak, P.E. “Public power puts the people of Brownsville first and Public Power Month gives us the chance to emphasize the reliable and safe service that we take pride in delivering to our friends and neighbors.”

BPUB invites community members to participate in a variety of Public Power Week events. Activities include:

  • Public Power Month Facebook Contest – Head over to the BPUB Facebook page throughout October for “electric” activities that could win you a home conservation kit. Be ready to talk about electrical conservation and learn more about electricity through the Home Energy Calculator found in the GoGreen section of the BPUB website. Winners will be determined by random drawing every Friday in October. Winners have until Oct. 31 to claim prizes. The final activity will be held Oct. 24.
  • Fall Community Tour: Electricity – Here’s your chance to learn more about the electrical system in Brownsville from the people who have committed their careers to powering the city. On Oct. 13, take a tour of the Silas Ray Power Plant, a substation and electric meter shop; learn about the Sendero Wind Farm; and witness the training that BPUB lineworkers must pass before being allowed to climb electrical poles. Lunch will be provided. Reserve your spot at the BPUB website; space is limited.
  • “Change a Light, Change the World” – More than 8,000 CFL light bulbs will be distributed for free at participating HEB stores in Brownsville starting Oct. 14 (while supplies last, coupon required, limit one per customer).

In 2014, BPUB was designated one of a few public power utilities to earn the Reliable Public Power Provider (RP3®) designation from the American Public Power Association (APPA) for providing customers with the highest degree of reliable and safe electric service.
