BPUB Board Member Joins APPA’s Policy Makers Council

The Brownsville Public Utilities Board (BPUB) announces the appointment of Daisy Zamora, Ph.D., Board of Directors Secretary/Treasurer, to a three-year term to the American Public Power Association (APPA) Policy Makers Council (PMC) elected by the APPA Board of Directors.

Zamora will be the only representative from Rio Grande Valley of the elected officials who serve on the PMC from across the country. The council assists APPA in promoting federal legislation that is important to public power utilities like BPUB. Council members meet a minimum of twice a year, and participate in meetings with elected representatives and congressional staff for the purposes of supporting APPA’s national legislative agenda.

BPUB General Manager & CEO Marilyn D. Gilbert expressed her support of Zamora’s appointment to the PMC.

“Zamora’s appointment to the APPA Policy Makers Council is a significant milestone for BPUB,” Gilbert said. “Her presence on the council will enhance our voice in important policy discussions and ensure that the interests of our community are well-represented at a national level. We are confident her advocacy will contribute to the betterment of BPUB and public utilities across the country.”

APPA supports not-for-profit, community-owned utilities that power 2,000 towns and cities nationwide serving more than 49 million customers and advocates and advises on electricity policy, technology, trends, training, and operations. Its members strengthen their communities by providing superior service, engaging citizens, and instilling pride in community-owned power. It also provides advice on other issues of importance to public power.

Zamora served on the City of Brownsville Charter Review Committee with the purpose of evaluating and proposing amendments to the City Charter. She also served as board chair of Come Dream Come Build (CDCB), a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing affordable housing solutions at the local, state, and national level. She is an associate professor at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine.
