BPUB Warns of Safety Issues With Signs on Utility Poles
The Brownsville Public Utilities Board (BPUB) is reminding the community that attaching unauthorized items, like signs, notices, boards or similar items, is prohibited per the city of Brownsville’s municipal code and can pose a safety risk for BPUB’s electrical workers.
Unauthorized attachments endanger BPUB’s lineworkers because protective gear can be damaged by sharp objects like nails, staples and tacks.

Attaching unauthorized items to utility poles endangers lineworkers.
The financial cost of replacing personal protective equipment is substantial, but concern for the safety and wellbeing of BPUB staff is even greater. Even minor damage can significantly increase the risk of severe injury or electrocution.
Attaching objects to utility poles also compromises the poles’ structural integrity. Repeated punctures and added weight can weaken the poles, increasing the risk of pole failure and potential power outages.
“We kindly ask everyone to avoid placing signs, decorations, or any objects on utility poles. These items can create serious safety hazards for our crews who work on them.
Utility poles are not meant for anything other than their intended use,” BPUB General Manager & CEO Marilyn D. Gilbert said. “When objects are attached, it puts our employees at risk.”
BPUB crews will remove any objects found on utility poles throughout the city.
