Golf tournament drives funds for needy families, scholarships

Another year has passed for the Project SHARE Golf Tournament, and it’s another year in which the Brownsville Public Utilities Board (BPUB) was able to raise funds for Project SHARE, a program established to assist the community in paying their utility bill and to provide college scholarships to graduating high school seniors.

Project SHARE, created in 1985, provides a helping hand to senior citizens on fixed incomes and low-income families in emergency situations who may experience difficulty in paying their BPUB electric, water or wastewater bill. Project SHARE also is used to provide scholarships to graduating high school seniors to pursue further educational opportunities. Scholarship money is provided by the annual BPUB Project SHARE Golf Tournament.

The weather couldn’t have been better for the tournament. While fun and birdies might have been at the forefront of everyone’s minds, the benefits that this tournament brings to the community were the reason why all of these players converged on the golf course.

The support provided by the tournament sponsors is greatly appreciated by all at BPUB as well as the customers and students who benefit from the funds raised through the tournament. More than 400 accounts received assistance paying their bills in fiscal year 2016, and 10 lucky Brownsville-area students each received a $1,000 scholarship to help them in the first year pursuing higher education.

Taking an active role in the community is something in which BPUB takes a lot of pride. As a municipally owned utility, BPUB sees it as part of its mission to stay involved in city events and do what it can to aid its customers. Project SHARE is one of the ways that BPUB does this, and this annual event goes a long way in ensuring that those extra funds are there to benefit those who need it most.

Congratulations to all the winners from the tournament!

Once again, BPUB received several generous sponsorships for the 2017 Project SHARE Golf Tournament. We wanted to thank all of the sponsors and donors who helped make this program such a success in our community.
